Going Darker: What a Tint Back Is and When You Need One

A tint back is a color service for going from light to dark, using demi permanent color to rebuild depth in hair that's been lightened. It's the right booking when you're growing out blonde, heading back toward your natural shade, or simply ready for something richer. Done with a plan, darker color looks full and even, not flat or murky.

Key takeaways

  • A tint back takes lightened or highlighted hair to a deeper shade.
  • Lightened hair has lost pigment, so darker color needs a thoughtful formula.
  • Single process only colors your root; a tint back works through your lengths.
  • Long or thick hair can need additional product, so plan for that.

What is a tint back, in plain terms?

A tint back puts depth back into hair that's been lightened. We apply demi permanent color across your lightened lengths and pieces, so highlights and grown out blonde come together as one deeper shade.

It's a change in direction, not a root touch up. Our tint back service is built for clients going from light to dark. That can mean a full return to brunette or just a softer step down.

Why can't I just put brown color over my blonde?

Because lightened hair is missing the warm pigment that makes brown look rich. When hair is lightened, the natural red, orange and gold tones get lifted out along with the dark ones.

Put a plain brown straight on top and you'll often get a result that looks hollow, muddy, or even a little green in some light. It can also fade out fast, since porous hair doesn't hold color well. A tint back accounts for that missing warmth in the formula, so your new shade has real depth and doesn't wash out after a few shampoos.

Do I need a tint back or just color at my root?

If the lightened hair through your lengths needs to go darker, you need a tint back. If you only want to change your regrowth, single process color at the root is the right booking.

And if your lengths are already the depth you like but look faded or brassy, you may only need tone. In that case, read our guide on what a hair gloss does, since it could be the simpler fix.

Tint back, single process or gloss

  • Tint back. Where color goes: Across lightened lengths and pieces. Choose it when: You want lightened hair to go darker.
  • Single process color. Where color goes: Your regrowth only. Choose it when: You want to change or cover your root.
  • Gloss. Where color goes: All over, one sheer shade. Choose it when: Your depth is right but tone or shine faded.

How a tint back appointment works

  1. Talk through the goal. Tell us how dark you want to go and bring photos. If you're heading back to your natural color, show us your regrowth or an old photo.
  2. Check your lightened hair. We look at how much of your hair is lightened and how porous it feels, since that changes how it takes color.
  3. Build the formula. We plan for the warmth your lightened hair is missing so the final shade looks rich instead of flat.
  4. Apply and process. Color goes on in careful sections through your lengths, then processes until it's fully developed.
  5. Rinse and review. We rinse, finish your hair, and check the shade with you in good light before you leave.

What happens to my color after a tint back?

Your new shade will soften a little as you wash, especially on the ends that were lightened the most. That's normal with demi permanent color on porous hair.

To keep it rich, use a shampoo made for color treated hair, rinse with cooler water, and protect your hair from heat. Skip harsh clarifying shampoos unless we suggest one. A follow up gloss is an easy way to top up depth and shine once your color starts to relax.

Can I go back to highlights later?

Yes, but it means lightening again, which is a bigger service than the tint back itself. Darker color has to be lifted back out, and that takes care to do well.

If you think you'll want brightness again in the future, tell us before your tint back. We can choose a formula and depth that leaves room for it. When the time comes, our guide to choosing between balayage, foilayage and highlights is a good place to start.

Does long or thick hair change the plan?

It does. Long or thick hair needs more color to saturate evenly and more time to apply, and we plan for both from the start. That way the formula doesn't run short halfway through your lengths.

Additional product may be needed for longer or denser hair, which adds to the total. You'll find current pricing on our Service Menu, and a complimentary consultation, in person or by video call, lets us look at your hair and give you a clearer picture before you book.

Your tint back questions, answered

Will a tint back cover my gray too?

A tint back focuses on lightened lengths and uses demi permanent color, which softens gray but won't fully cover it. If you have a lot of gray at your root, we may pair your tint back with root color. Mention your gray when you book so we plan for it.

How dark can I go in one visit?

Most clients can reach their goal shade in one visit, since depositing color is easier than lifting it. Heavily porous or uneven hair can need a second appointment to even out. We'll tell you at your consultation if we expect that, so there are no surprises.

Is a tint back the same as a color correction?

No. A tint back is planned darker color over lightened hair. A correction fixes a result that didn't turn out right, which may involve lightening, toning and darkening together. If your hair has patches from box color or past services, book a consultation first so we can see it.

Why does my hair look darker right after a tint back?

Freshly applied demi permanent color sits at its deepest for the first few washes. It usually relaxes a little over the following weeks, especially on ends that were lightened the most. We choose your shade with that softening in mind.

Can I do a tint back if I have extensions?

Let us know about extensions before your visit. Extension hair doesn't always take color the same way your own hair does, so we plan the formula and application around both. Your stylist will talk through options at your consultation.
