Going darker is its own kind of color

Putting depth back into lightened hair is not the same as coloring your root. Lightened hair has lost pigment, so applying a darker shade can leave it looking flat, murky, or uneven. A tint back is built for this change: your stylist uses demi permanent color across the lightened areas to rebuild depth and tone so the result reads rich and even.

It differs from single process color, which is regrowth only and focuses on root depth and gray coverage. A tint back works on the lengths that were lightened. It also goes further than a gloss, which refreshes tone with one color but is not meant to take a head of highlights darker.

Clients come to it tired of the upkeep on blonde, returning toward their natural color, or ready for something deeper. Whatever the reason, the goal is hair that looks like it grew that way.

Tint backs are offered by Angela, Liza and Yulia, and by founder Brianne Dubé for returning clients.

  • A clean return to depth

Demi permanent color rebuilds depth across lightened hair so highlights and grown out blonde come together as one richer shade. The change is deliberate and even, without the patchiness of darker color applied without a plan.

  • Closer to your natural color

If you want to grow out lightened hair, a tint back can bring your lengths closer to your natural shade so regrowth blends in as it comes through. The transition is far less obvious than waiting it out.

  • Less upkeep ahead

Moving darker can mean fewer lightening appointments going forward. Your stylist will talk through maintenance at your new depth, whether that is an occasional gloss or color at the root, so you know what to expect.

  • Planned around your hair

Long or thick hair needs more color and more time, and your stylist plans for that. You get a formula and application sized to your hair, not a standard approach that runs short halfway through.

More about tint Back

What to expect at your appointment

Your appointment opens with a conversation about how dark you want to go and how much of your hair has been lightened. Photos of the shade you want help a lot. Your stylist checks the condition of your lightened hair, since porous hair takes color differently, and plans around it.

Demi permanent color is applied through the lightened areas, processed and rinsed, and your stylist checks the result for evenness. Long or thick hair needs additional time to saturate every section properly.

Aftercare and maintenance

Darker color can soften as you wash, especially on hair that was previously lightened. Use a shampoo made for color treated hair, rinse with cooler water, and use heat protection before hot tools. Skip harsh clarifying shampoos unless your stylist recommends one.

Book a follow up with your stylist to keep the depth rich as it settles. Depending on how your color holds, that might be single process color at the root or a gloss to refresh tone and shine through your lengths.

How pricing works

A tint back is priced as a base service that includes a set amount of demi permanent color. Long or thick hair needs more product and additional time, and both add to the total. Pricing also varies by stylist. See the Service Menu for current pricing, or ask during a complimentary consultation.

From a Google review

“LIZA is amazing! For the first time in so many years my hair looks healthy. She helped me go back to my natural hair color. She cut my hair in a way that makes my waves look so good, and my hair isn’t even that wavy! I constantly get compliments on my hair. I will follow her anywhere she goes. ♥️ Also, she is very welcoming and it’s like you are hanging out with a friend.”

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I need a tint back or single process?

Choose a tint back if lightened hair through your lengths needs to go darker. Choose single process if you only need color at your regrowth for depth, tone or gray coverage. Unsure? A complimentary consultation will point you to the right booking.

Can a tint back take me back to my natural color?

A tint back is often the first step toward your natural shade. Your stylist matches your lengths as closely as possible to your natural color so regrowth blends as it comes in. Bring photos of your natural color as a reference.

Will my hair look flat after going darker?

It should not. Lightened hair has lost pigment, which is why tint backs are planned carefully rather than done with one darker shade over everything. Your stylist builds depth and tone into the formula so the color looks rich, not muddy.

Why does long or thick hair cost more?

Long or thick hair needs more color to saturate evenly and more time to apply. The base price covers a set amount of color, and additional product and time are added when needed. Your stylist can estimate this at a consultation.

Can I go lighter again later?

Yes, though going light again after a tint back means lightening, which is a bigger service. If you think you may want highlights later, mention it before your tint back so your stylist can factor it into the plan.
