What Happens at a Hair Extension Consultation
A hair extension consultation is a complimentary visit, in person or by video call, where your stylist looks at your hair, matches color, recommends a method, and gives you personalized pricing. Nothing is ordered or installed until you've seen the plan. Every new extension client at Dubé starts here.
Key takeaways
- The consultation is complimentary and can happen in person or by video call.
- Your stylist checks density, length, color and how you style your hair.
- Pricing is personal and given at the consultation.
- Clean, dry hair in natural light makes color matching easier.
Why can't I just book an extension install?
Because the plan has to fit your hair before any hair is ordered. Extensions are built for one head. The amount of hair, the shades, and the placement all change from client to client, so we can't set that up from a booking form.
The consultation also lets you meet your stylist first. You'll see how they think, ask anything you like, and leave with a clear plan. New to us? Here's what a first appointment with us looks like.

Is a video consultation as good as coming in?
For most clients, yes. A video call works well when you're busy, traveling, or just want to start the plan from home. Your stylist can see your length, your color and your part, and talk through your goals the same way.
Good light helps a lot. Sit near a window, skip heavy styling, and be ready to turn slowly so we can see the back. If a shade is hard to read on camera, we may ask you to send a clear photo or check the match again before your install.
In person or video call: choosing your consultation
- Best for. In person: Tricky color matches and first timers who want to feel the hair. Video call: Busy schedules, travel, or starting the plan from home.
- What we can check. In person: Density by touch, color in salon light. Video call: Length, color and part on camera.
- What helps. In person: Clean, dry hair styled your usual way. Video call: Window light, no heavy styling, a clear photo of the back.
What should I bring to my consultation?
Bring clean, dry hair worn the way you normally style it. That shows us your real texture and density. Add a few photos of hair you love, and a few you don't. Both help.
- Tell us how you wear your hair on a normal day and on a big night.
- Share your color history, including any box color or recent lightening.
- Mention any past extensions and how they went.
- Bring your questions, even the small ones.
What is my stylist looking at during the visit?
Your stylist is checking if your hair can carry extensions comfortably and which method will blend best. That means feeling your density at the crown and nape, looking at the condition of your ends, and seeing where your hair is thinnest.
They'll also look at your color up close, in more than one light. Our team specializes in custom blended extensions, so you may get more than one shade mixed to pick up your natural dimension. From there, your stylist will suggest K-Tip, hand tied or tape in, and explain why.

We'd rather spend the time up front than guess on your hair.

How is my price worked out?
Your price comes from the amount of hair you need, the length you want, how much color blending is involved, and the stylist you book with. That's why there's no single extension price on our menu.
You'll get personalized pricing before you commit, so there are no surprises on install day. The Service Menu lists the consultation and move ups. A credit card holds any appointment you book with us.
What happens after I say yes?
Your stylist confirms the method, the shades and the amount of hair, then schedules your install with you. The hair is ordered to your plan.
Before install day, you may be asked to arrive with freshly washed hair and no oils or heavy products at the root, especially for tape ins. If you're pairing extensions with new color, we'll usually plan the color first so the match is exact.

Your extension consultation questions, answered
Do I have to decide on a method before my consultation?
No. Most clients come in with a goal, not a method, and that's the best way to start. Tell us the length, fullness and styles you want. Your stylist will recommend the method that fits your hair and explain the tradeoffs so the final choice is yours.
Can I get my color done at the same visit as my consultation?
The consultation is its own visit so your stylist can focus on the plan. If you want new color with your extensions, we'll talk timing there. Usually we color first and then match the extension shades to your fresh result, so the blend holds up after install.
What if my stylist says extensions aren't right for me right now?
It happens, and it's a good thing. If your hair needs time to recover, we'll tell you plainly and suggest what to do first, such as a trim or a strengthening treatment. When your hair is ready, we can pick the plan back up.
Is there any obligation after a free consultation?
None. The consultation is complimentary, and you leave with a plan and pricing to think over. Book your install when it feels right for you. Some clients decide on the spot, and others take a few weeks to plan around an event or their schedule.
Can I bring someone with me?
Of course. A friend or partner can help you think through the look and ask questions you might forget. Just let us know when you book so we can plan the space. On a video call, anyone you like can join you on screen.
