The middle ground between a refresh and a full head
Partial lightening sits between our two other highlight options. It covers more of your head than impact lightening, which stays on your part, hairline and crown, but it leaves more of your natural color untouched than full lightening does. That balance, brightness with some of your own depth kept, is the whole point.
Because some of your own shade stays in place, the brightness you get has built in contrast. Your hair looks dimensional rather than evenly light, and the grow out tends to feel easier because your natural color is already part of the design. It works well for brunettes going a little brighter and blondes who want to keep things soft.
Every partial lightening includes a toner to set your final shade and a blowdry so you see the result before you go. If you later decide you want brightness through the back and underneath too, full lightening is the natural next step.
Book partial lightening with Angela, Liza, known for lived in color, Yulia, who specializes in dimensional color, or founder Brianne for returning clients.
Why clients choose partial lightening
-
Brightness with contrast
Lightening half your head leaves some of your natural color between the brighter pieces. That contrast is what makes hair look dimensional, so your color reads as rich and layered rather than one flat shade from top to bottom.
-
A gentler commitment
Less of your hair is lightened than in a full service, so it is a comfortable place to start if you are new to highlights, want to test a brighter look or prefer to keep more of your hair natural.
-
Toner and blowdry included
Your stylist tones your hair after lightening so the shade lands where you asked, warm, cool or somewhere in between. The blowdry at the end means you leave seeing the real color, not a damp guess.
-
Easy to build on later
If you love the result and want more, you can move to full lightening at a future visit. If you only need your front pieces refreshed between appointments, impact lightening covers that without redoing everything.
More about partial Lightening
What to expect at your appointment
Your visit begins with a short conversation about how bright you want to go and where you would like to see the light. Your stylist then lightens roughly half of your head, choosing sections that show when you wear your hair the way you usually do.
After the lightener has done its work, we rinse, tone your hair to your chosen shade and finish with a blowdry. Before you leave, your stylist explains how the color should grow out and when to return.
Aftercare and maintenance
Treat lightened sections with a little extra care. Wash with a gentle shampoo, condition every time and use a heat protectant before styling. Ask your stylist which products fit your hair type before you head out.
Because your natural color stays woven through, partial lightening usually grows out softly. A gloss or custom toning between visits keeps the shade fresh. Returning clients can book Express Half Head Lightening, the same service without a blowdry, when they want a quicker maintenance visit.
How pricing works
Partial lightening starts from a base price set by the stylist you choose. Longer or denser hair may need additional product, which adds to the total. Express Half Head Lightening is available at its own price for existing clients. Check the Service Menu for current pricing by stylist before you book online.
From a Google review
“I can’t say enough good things about Yulia! She is incredibly talented at blonding and balayage. Her work has such a dimensional, refined look that perfectly complements and enhances my natural hair color. I don’t get my hair done as often as I probably should, so having low-maintenance color that grows out gracefully is a must. Yulia gets it right every single time. She pays incredible attention to detail and really listens to what I want, so the blend is always seamless and never looks harsh or grown out, just effortless. Yulia is detail-oriented, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about her work. Every visit feels thoughtful and personalized. Highly, highly recommend!”

Frequently asked questions
How much of my hair does partial lightening cover?
Partial lightening is a half head service, so roughly half of your hair is lightened. Your stylist chooses which sections based on how you part and wear your hair, so the brightness shows where you want it while more of your natural color stays in place.
Is partial lightening a good first highlight?
It often is. It gives you visible brightness without lightening every section, so it feels like a comfortable first step. If you want to go dramatically blonder on your first visit, Big Change Lightening allows the extra time that needs.
How is partial lightening different from impact lightening?
Impact lightening stays on the areas people see first: your face framing pieces, along your part and through the crown. It does not include the back or sides. Partial lightening reaches further, covering about half your head, so the brightness is more noticeable from more angles.
Does partial lightening include toner?
Yes. Every partial lightening includes a toner and a blowdry. Toning sets your final shade after lightening, so your blonde or caramel lands warm, cool or neutral as you asked. Existing clients can book the express version, which skips the blowdry.
Can I switch to full lightening later?
Of course. Many clients start with partial lightening, then move to full lightening when they want brightness through the back and underneath. Your stylist will plan placement so the new lightening blends with what you already have and nothing looks patchy.
